LOCATION
Guntur lies on 16�18' North latituded and 80�29' East longitude on the globe.
It lies about 6 miles to the east of Kondaveedu range of hills. The G.N.T. road connecting KOLKATA and CHENNAI is passing through the of the City.
The metre gauge railway line from Guntur to Marma Goa which was running right across the Deccan is also running through the heart of the town.
The pertier of this Railway Line from Machilipatnam to Guntur has been converted into broad gauge.
The Broad Gauge Railway Line starting from Repalle situated in the East-Coast joins the Chennai - Kolkatta Railway Line at Tenali and terminates at Guntur,
thus forming a Railway Junction with Meter Gauge. Further, there is a Broad Gauge railway line to Macherla from Guntur.
There are seven major roads emerging out from Guntur town going to far off places:
1. Great northern trunk road leads towards Kokatta via Vijayawada from the heart of the town passing through the Tabacco companies located on either side of
it even beyond the Municipal limits.
2. The second read runs East Ward to Tenali starting from the G.N.T. Road and passing between Red marks and Old Guntur.
3. The third road (Budampadu Road) goes towards South-East from the above junction along the Western bund of the Red Tank III, leading to Ponnur, Bapatla and Chirala etc.
4. The fourth road known as Etukuru road branches off from G.N.T. Road near Municipal Office, enters the Heavy Commercial Zone
and emerges out a factories ward and goes to Etukuru in a South Western direction.
5. The fifth is a continuation of the G.N.T. Road running West towards Madras.
6. The sixty road leading to Hydeabad via Nagarjuna Sagar branches off from G.N.T. to Madras at the Old Municipal limits of the Town.
7. The seventh road takes off from the G.N.T. road infront of Municipal Office and leads to Amaravathi situated at a distance of 20 miles on the banks of river Krishna.
Amaravathi is famour for its buddhist monuments.
Guntur town has a population 187,122 according to 1961 census.
It extends ever an area of 11.68 sq. miles, while its population was 30,183 persons as per 1901 census.
It has grown about six times in its size during these 60 years.
Guntur is one of the potential and biggest tobbacco Trading & Refining centre in India.

Guntur is the Head Quarters of the Guntur district. Almost all the district units of all Government Departments are located here.
The Regional offices of the State and Central Government like Excise and Central Revenue Departments are now in Guntur.
In Andhra Pradesh next to Vijayawada, Guntur is a very Popular Commercial Centre.
It is the Production, Marketing and Distributing centre of Agricultural produce like Chillies, Onions, Corriander, Turmaric, Cereals
and other related produce grown in the Western and Southern Region of Guntur District and the Eastern half of Kurnool District.
These products not only have local market but are also exported to several parts of the country.
The most important Commercial Agricultural produce traded at Guntur is Tobacco.
The large proportion of Varginia variety of tobacco (over 60% of all India total) used for the manufacture of Cigarettes and Cigars
which is one of the major Foreign Exchange earners of the country is grown in areas around Guntur city.
Guntur is also the marketing centre of other varieties of tobacco.
For the entire Guntur District and the Eastern Taluks of Kurnool district, Guntur town is the centre for
wholesale marketing of consumer goods, machinery and other essential articles.
In additional Guntur is also one of the important timber markets.
Guntur is also be deemed to be the Cultural centre for the entire Guntur District.
In Guntur these are more number of professional colleges and other Higher Educational Institutions than in Vijayawada.
Due to location of General Hospital and Medical College Guntur is serving as a centre for specialised medical treatment for the people of
Nellore, Guntur, Krishna and West Godavari Districts.
Thus Guntur is having its influence even in the adjacent districts also.
